Ginger is an age-old tuber that has been used for thousands of years as a uniquely flavored spice, as well as for its healing qualities. New research demonstrates that the same properties that help give ginger its flavor and restorative traits can also help improve recovery from lifting heavy weights.
Natural compounds within ginger, which include gingerols and shogaols, have been shown to have strong anti-inflammatory properties. Reduced inflammation in the digestive system is another way in which ginger can prevent stomach upset, and is also the mechanism by which ginger reduces joint pain and stiffness. Heavy lifting produces high levels of inflammation within muscles and joints. Although that process serves as an important stimulus to help boost muscle size, excessive inflammation can wind up having a negative, rather than positive, effect on size and strength gains.
THE STUDY Georgia College and State University (Milledgeville) and University of Georgia (Athens) researchers teamed up to test ginger’s effects on recovery from heavy lifting. Two separate studies were conducted, one in which 2 grams of raw ginger was used, and the other in which 2 g of steamed ginger was used (which has higher levels of active ginger compounds). In both studies, participants performed biceps curls using heavy negatives in order to induce high levels of inflammation. The researchers then measured if range of motion and muscle pain were improved in the groups receiving ginger versus groups that received an inactive placebo.
THE RESULTS
Combined results of the leasehold enfranchisement two studies found that both forms of ginger significantly reduced arm-muscle pain–by up to 30%–compared to the groups receiving a placebo

Biblical Theology Bulletin, Nov, 2009 by David M. Bossman
Where authority exists, the exercise of power seems natural and even divinely sanctioned. In the name of legitimate authority, power can be and often is abused. Anecdotes abound about how those in authority faced challenges to their actions and decisions, often with dire consequence for those risking all to launch the challenge. The challenger rather than the authority figure may well have been on firmer ground for true legitimacy. Examples of challenges populate the biblical canon and reinforce the notion that truth outranks power. In the conflict between social truth (justice) and authority (power), the higher standing seems clearly to go to truth. But this was not often realized when authority endowed rulers with absolute power.
The argument has been made that moderns have lost awareness of what traditional authority was, having too often suffered from totalitarian regimes holding power under the guise of legitimate authority. Modern political philosophers devised mechanisms that regulate reciprocity (mutuality) and centricity (giving and receiving), that aim at an equitable distribution of goods and services within society. A system of checks and balances aims to avoid the abuse of centricity, evidenced in the agglomeration of power, by the magic of making up which what goes to the center remains there and is not redistributed. Mutuality holds a middle position within reciprocity between indifference and pure self-interest (see Bruce Malina, Christian Origins and Cultural Anthropology [John Knox Press, 1986], pp. 99-102). What modern political practice seeks to regulate was often left unchecked in traditional societies unless challenged from within at great risk.
Biblical accounts describe how such challenges did in fact occur, often by subtle means that modern eyes may miss. Challenges continue into the present when pre-modern assumptions govern behavior despite advances in modern political systems. The line that divides modern from pre-modern may well be obscured by the inertia of religious imagination that continues to govern perceptions and social realities regardless of venue.
Dimensions of these phenomena, from ancient realities to modern awareness, are examined in articles within this issue of BTB.
Gale A. Yee, in “‘Take this Child and Suckle it for Me’: Wet nurses and Resistance in Ancient Israel” delivers a stunning examination of issues associated with the rescue of Moses as an infant and the engagement of his wet nurse in the court of the pharaoh. The article exposes the “subversion of the usual social expectations for wet nurses in antiquity.” In this careful study, we come to understand what traditional practices required, and what in fact the story reveals.
Robert Gnuse’s study, “The Assault upon Kings and Tyrants in the Moses Tradition” exposes how the criticism of the king, being a “serious matter,” was nonetheless achieved by subtle critiques of royal power in Exodus and Numbers. Tactical civil disobedience, easily missed by readers today, is implicit in the biblical text. The fact that it was midwives who carried the message is particularly stunning. How the story of Moses related this message is particularly insightful and incisive for modern readers innocent of the power-claims of traditional authorities.
