Vermont’s big downhill ski resorts get all the press, but a parallel universe of alternative winter sports takes you far from the crowds. We discussed the various options with Lissy Hemenway, a sled-dog musher and longtime member of the Vermont Outdoor Guide Association.
Suppose you want to get out and explore New England’s winter wonderland, but mingling with snow bunnies in designer skiwear never has been your thing. Did you know Vermont still has low-key resorts where you can downhill ski for less than $40? Add to that opportunities for dog-sledding, sleigh rides, cross-country skiing, horseback riding and maple sugaring, and you’ve got more than enough variety to fill a long weekend.
Twenty minutes east of Middlebury lies the wild heart of Green Mountain National Forest. This is Hemenway’s backyard, where she’s been mushing sled dogs for years. It’s also home to the Middlebury College Snow Bowl, one of Vermont’s most affordable, least crowded downhill ski areas.
“There’s a trail for everyone from beginner to advanced,” says Hemenway. You can ski all day here for pennies on the dollar, and lift lines are rarely a problem. A few miles southwest is the Blueberry Hill Cross-Country Ski Center.
“Blueberry Hill is a gem because it’s way off the beaten path. There are over 100 miles of trails, connecting into the forest service system. The Catamount Trail (running from Quebec to Massachusetts) skirts one edge of their property and keeps going. You can literally go anywhere,” says Hemenway. “They have a big lunch that’s part of the package, with a pot of hearty soup and their famous Blueberry Hill cookies.”
Across the road sits the Blueberry Hill Inn, an old blue farmhouse whose creaking and sloping wood floors bespeak centuries of use.
For an apres-ski experience with local flavor, try American Flatbread in Middlebury. Set below Otter Creek Falls in a cavernous marble building with 30-foot ceilings, Flatbread still manages to retain an amazingly cozy feeling. The menu couldn’t be simpler — thin-crust pizza, salads and a drinks list heavy on Vermont microbrews — but everything’s ultra-fresh, with many organic ingredients.
Thirteen miles northeast in Bristol, the old-fashioned bar at the brick-wall, tin-ceiling Bobcat Cafe & Brewery makes an atmospheric place to taste-test home brews like App-Gap IPA. Diners on a tight budget can grab a beer and a bite, but the Bobcat’s also elegant enough for a romantic sit-down dinner.
North of Bristol, where Route 17 and Route 116 meet, the Inn at Baldwin Creek has its own fabulous restaurant and provides comfy overnight lodging.
Next morning, climb 10 miles northeast along Route 17 and Gore Road to Hillsboro Sugarworks, one of Vermont’s largest organic maple- sugar operations. Throughout the late March/early April sugaring season, you can taste syrup straight from the evaporator or don snowshoes to explore the sugarbush (that’s maple groves, for you flatlanders).
Just over Appalachian Gap along Route 17 lies Mad River Glen, an iconoclastic downhill ski area whose long single-chairlift (a relic unique in the U.S.) and bargain lift tickets make it a darling of Vermonters. The runs are just plain fun, and the dizzying views of Mad River Valley and north toward Camel’s Hump are among the state’s best.If You Go– Where to Eat: American Flatbread — 802-388-3300; www.americanflatbread.com; 137 Maple St., Middlebury

Deseret News (Salt Lake City), Jul 21, 2009 by John Miller Associated Press
HAILEY, Idaho — The Pentagon said Monday that troops are “sparing no effort” to find an American soldier captured by the Taliban as his family pleaded for privacy and residents in his hometown tied yellow ribbons on trees along Main Street in a show of solidarity.
The actions came two days after the Taliban released a video of Pfc. Bowe R. Bergdahl in captivity expressing his fear that he would never see or hug his family again. The footage showed Bergdahl with his head shaved, eating a meal and sitting cross-legged on what appeared to be a bunk.
“We’ve been overwhelmed with the outpouring of support and concern towards Bowe and our family,” the family said in a statement read by Blaine County Sheriff Walt Femling. “As you know, the situation is extremely difficult for everyone involved. We’d like to remind all of you our sole focus is seeing our beloved son Bowe safely home.”
Defense Secretary Robert Gates condemned the video Monday, saying he was disgusted by the exploitation of a prisoner. “Our commanders are sparing no effort to find this young soldier,” Gates said at a Pentagon news conference.
Bergdahl, 23, grew up just outside Hailey, a central Idaho resort town where residents said he was home-schooled, danced ballet and rode his bike everywhere in town. They also called him adventurous and said he joined the Army at least in part because he wanted to learn more about the world. He had been stationed at Fort Richardson, Alaska.
Bergdahl’s parents, Bob and Jani Bergdahl, have refused requests to be interviewed, and the sheriff declined to answer personal questions about Bergdahl in a news conference that was televised nationally from this town of 7,000 people.
And few in town would speak openly about Bergdahl because of fears that any remarks might hurt the possibility of his safe return. The town learned about the capture in early July but kept quiet about the ordeal.
The circumstances of Bergdahl’s capture on June 30 weren’t clear.
On July 2, two U.S. officials told The Associated Press the soldier had “just walked off” his base with three Afghans after his shift

Over 40% of American women are 5’4″ or under, which in fashion terms places them firmly within the “petite” range. However, many women remain unaware petite clothing is the right choice for them. Additionally, many are unable to find petite clothing that is readily available that fits their personal style.

Dear Dr. Gott: My husband and I have read many times about people suffering from dry mouth. We, too, have this problem, which we think is caused by some of the medications we take.
Somewhere, I read that Tic Tacs are good for this problem, so when I go to bed at night, I place one between my lower gum and cheek. It slowly dissolves during the night and keeps the saliva glands excreting fluid.
Dear Reader: I am glad that you have had success with this treatment, but I am not willing to recommend it. Tic Tacs are a candy with high sugar content. By repeatedly placing the sugar in contact with your teeth, you are risking cavities.
I suggest you discontinue the practice and consult your physician or a dentist about more appropriate options to relieve your dry mouth .
Dear Dr

THERE are certainly a whole load of coughs and sneezes going around at the moment.
But what is the difference between a cold and the flu and should you treat them differently?
They are both caused by viruses. Colds are caused by rhinoviruses – ‘rhino’ actually means nose. There are hundreds of rhinoviruses, which is why we catch so many colds.
We catch about three colds every winter and slowly become immune to the ones we have already been exposed to – so as we get older, we catch fewer colds.
The symptoms are concentrated on the nose, with the eyes, sinuses and throat being affected also.
A streaming nose, sneezing, sore throat, tickly cough, irritable eyes and sometimes a slight temperature are familiar to us all. A cold should last for about four or five days.
Treatment of a cold is with plenty of warm fluids, paracetamol or a cold remedy from the chemist, decongestant nose drops steam inhalations and vapour rubs.
There is absolutely no place for antibiotics in the treatment of a cold because they don’t work.
Should you take time off work? I guess that depends on how bad you feel. Most colds are part of life in the winter and it’s best to keep going as normal if you can.
But sometimes you can feel rather overwhelmed by the virus, in which case you might need a day off.
Flu is caused by a different type of virus, the influenza virus. The symptoms are more severe, with a high temperature, aching limbs, headache, cough, exhaustion and loss of appetite.
Sometimes there are symptoms of a cold as well
