LIZ HURLEY says she has discovered the joys of laundry now she’s the mother of a baby boy. ‘I love ironing his romper suits,’ she enthused recently.

But few among the rest of us approach with glad heart a heap of crumpled linen waiting to be squashed flat and neatly folded – however many bottles of L’Occitane lavender-scented ironing water we have lined up to make the task seem more glamorous.

A spanking new iron helps, of course. But which to choose, and how much is it worth spending? I tested 11 irons, then took the best five of them home to test with the help of my mother (who, after all, has years more ironing behind her). Here are the results.

We both liked the Rowenta Professional Laser best, and once the business of testing was over, this was the one Mum chose to finish off her ironing. It handles well and is quite heavy, which made the business of flattening effortless.

It also scored well on all the basics such as temperature control and steam power. If we’re nitpicking, we didn’t like the plastic flex.

On the next two, we had mixed feelings. Having approached the Morphy Richards Digital model with Luddite suspicion, we were surprised to find it wasn’t at all complicated to use.

ALTHOUGH the control was quite stiff, we scored it highly because it was so dazzlingly powerful that it made light of the bone dry cotton sheets I’d had crumpled in my ironing cupboard for several weeks.

Mum agreed it was by far the best for large items, but pointed out that she would never let her sheets get into such a state anyway, and that it was not delicate enough for use on clothes.

It was also somewhat cumbersome but Mum praised its stability, saying it wouldn’t easily knock over when propped end-up on the ironing board.

I liked the Philips Azur 400, which glided well, nosed slickly into shirt seams, and had controls which were set by adjusting the dial to ‘silk’, ‘cotton’, etc rather than the 1-2-3 points system used by the two irons above.

But Mum said it was topheavy, which made it easy to knock over, and that over a long period it would hurt her wrist as she picked it up and put it back down.

She also hated the way the soleplate – a special multilayered material developed by Philips – rasped over the fabric. I disagreed, and felt it performed well for little effort.

The Russell Hobbs Classic Steamglide performed only moderately in the crucial business of flattening.

HOWEVER, it was winningly compact, light, and swift of soleplate. The steam facility seemed quite powerful but, alas, dribbled water the first time I tried the steam boost.

Mum thought all these irons seemed quite expensive, pointing out that she was quite happy with her faithful Philips Mistral. OK, so it didn’t match the performance of our top irons, but it is excellent value for money.

We have scored the irons out of ten, taking account of design, performance and ease of use, but not price.
